Tectonic Plate

Pieces of the lithosphere that move around on top of the asthenosphere are called tectonic plates. Not all tectonic plates are the same. There are three tectonic plate boundaries: convergent, divergent and transform. A convergent boundary is where two tectonic plates separate. A divergent boundary is where two tectonic plates collide. Lastly, a transform boundary is where two tectonic plates slide past each other. Tectonic plates will include either continental or oceanic crust. Some tectonic plates contain both continental crust and oceanic, for example, the South American crust. (Holt Science and Technology Textbook)
